Aliso Niguel High School   Senior Advanced Composition

This senior English class prepares students for college-level composition. The overall objective is to improve students' skills in the areas of academic reading and expository writing. Students will mostly read non-fiction essays that are often topical and controversial. Given that this is a high level college prep course, the assumption is that most students will be entering a college environment in less than a year's time. According to a recent study of Cal State and UC professors, "faculty expect students to have an appetite to experiment with new ideas, challenge their own beliefs, seek out other points of view, and contribute to intellectual discussions" and to have the "ability to convey their ideas clearly and to listen and respond to divergent views respectfully."  With this goal in mind, students are expected to be mature and respectful as they interact with sophisticated texts.
