Welcome to World History.

This is a two-semester sophomore world history class that has been integrated with an English II class.  Both are requirements for graduation in the Capistrano Unified School District.

In this class we will cover the following units:

  • The Rise of Democracy
  • Enlightenment and Revolution
  • The Industrial Revolution and Imperialism
  • World War I and the Russian Revolution
  • World War II and the Cold War
  • The Modern World

Notebook: The notebook is the student's responsibility to keep up to date.  The notebook needs to be a three ring, loose-leaf type.  The notebook needs to contain the following: four dividers labeled Journals, Assignments, Notes, and Quiz Reviews.

  • Journals: Every class will begin with a journal. Journals will be collected at the end of each six-week grading period.

       • Assignments: Assignments given in class and not finished will be homework.  Assignments will be graded  on           completeness and accuracy. No late assignments will be accepted, except in the case of absence.

  • Notes: Notes will be taken in class on a regular basis. Notes will not be graded but the content will be found on test, quizzes, and will be needed to complete assignments, essays, and projects.
  • Quiz, Test, and Final Reviews: Quizzes are given the first day of each week (usually on Monday). I put all the quiz questions on the website the week before the quiz so students can find all the answers and study over the weekend. Unit tests use many of the same questions. In addition, the week before the test I go over the entire test in tutorial and in class. The final is made up of questions from previous tests and quizzes.

Group Projects: Students will be grouped to complete a project every six weeks. If a student does not complete their portion of the project, they can receive a zero. Other students in the group will not be penalized for the student who did not do their portion of the assignment. Outstanding projects can receive extra credit.

Grading Scale:

                                A             90 - 100%

                                B             80 - 89%

                                C             70 - 79%

                                D             60 - 69%

                                F              0 - 59%

Percentages will be rounded to the nearest whole number.

Attendance: Regular attendance is essential for success in this class. When absent, it is the student's responsibility to make up the work they missed. Work that was due the day of the absence is due the day the student returns to class.

Make-up Work: You are allowed time when you are absent to make up the work you missed.  This includes homework, class work and tests.  You may obtain this information during the tutorial period or from another classmate.  You will have two school days for each day of absence to turn in your work and/or make up tests (not block days, school days).  I will make arrangements with students who have special circumstances and/or who speak with me prior to the date work is due.  You are not permitted to make up work if your absence is unexcused.

Website: Homework assignments, quiz reviews, project assignments, links to helpful websites, extra credit opportunities, and grades can all be found on-line on the school website. This website is updated at least once a week, and always has students' most current grades.

Other policies:

  • 1. No food or drink (except water), including candy and sodas, will be permitted in class.

  • 2. Students will be in their seat with appropriate material for the lesson when the bell rings. Students who are not in their seats when the bell rings will be considered tardy and the school discipline policy will be followed.

  • 3. Students will be permitted in tutorial one day per week, unless prior approval has been granted. Students may also come in during lunch or after school if they would like extra help.

  • 4. Any student caught cheating will receive a zero and the school disciplinary policy will be followed. Cheating is considered a violation of the Academic Honesty Policy. Cheating includes: copying another students homework; using notes or cheat sheets when not approved for tests and quizzes; plagiarism; copying answers directly from the text that are not properly cited; collaborating with other students on answers when not given prior approval.
